||||| RDRC.21808: REGINA CAELI III - (QUEEN OF HEAVEN II): The origin /author of this title for Mary is unknown but it is believed to date back to the time of St Gregory the Great. The legend says he heard the first three lines ('Regina cæli lætare, Alleluia: Quia quem meruisti portare, Alleluia: Resurrexit sicut dixit, Allelluia') being sung by angels while walking barefoot behind the icon of the Virgin believed painted by the Evangelist Luke one Easter morning in Rome, He was thereupon inspired to add the fourth line. ('Ora pro nobis Deum, Alleluia')

-- TRANSLATION:

V. Queen of Heaven, rejoice, alleluia.
R. For He whom you did merit to bear, alleluia.
V. Has risen, as he said, alleluia.
R. Pray for us to God, alleluia.
V. Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, alleluia.
R. For the Lord has truly risen, alleluia.

Regina Caeli or Regina Coeli ("Queen of Heaven") is an ancient latin Marian Hymn of the Christian Church. It is one of the four seasonal Marian antiphons of the Blessed Virgin Mary, prescribed to be sung or recited in the Liturgy of the Hours at the conclusion of the last of the hours to be prayed in common that day, typically night prayer (Compline or Vespers).
