||||| IMMACULADA - 1693 - IMMACULATE CONCEPTION In 1669, Mt Aetna erupted and Catania was covered in lava / a lake of fire. 24 years later in 1693 an earthquake shook the town down to its foundations. On Jan 11, over 100,000 people were killed in Catania Sicily by a major earthquake. The first earthquake was on 9 January, at 4:30 am (6.2mg) followed on the 11th the second earthquake at 7.4mg. By May of that year, the people underwent a religious reformation and elected the Madonna of the Immaculate Conception as their patron saint. Catania would rise again and rebuild in the Baroque style using lava as its building stone. . ||||| IMMACULATE CONCEPTION MEDAL - 1693 The ancient medal commemoration of these events,showing Our Lady holding the child, Jesus.
