Description
A WEDDING CROSS – BYZANTINE ‘ENCOLPION’ (Gr. egkolpion, that which is worn on the breast) – also called the ‘DAGMAR CROSS’ (Queen Dagmar, pronounced ‘Dowmer’ – Markéta of Bohemia). She was from Bohemia and married Danish King Valdemar so is the favorite of both countries. This cross may be the top of a reliquary that often carried relics of the ‘true cross’ as was the one discovered on the Queen when her body was exhumed in the 1600s. (Design believed to date back to 1000 AD)
