Description
LACY FILIGREE VIRGIN MEDAL / CENTER: A precious medal for chaplets and rosaries or to wear. It is hard to express how well this medal works with so many designs. It may also be used as a center, (note 2 rings at top.) From Latin America or ‘New Spain’ dated 18c. Mary with child Jesus. Also, note the halo over Mary’s head, it becomes part of the filigree work as if feeding it all around her!
This style is traditionally found attached to rosaries of this period (18 – 19c) as seen in museum books on antique jewelry and rosaries. We suspect this may have been called ‘Our Lady of Pilar’ because of the column under the image of Mary, a devotion dating back to the first century. (Spain)
ABOUT OUR MEDALS: All medals on our website are hand cast from antiques and vintage pieces in sterling silver and solid bronze then antiqued to restore original patina.
