TURQUOISE and PYRITE “ZEHNER”

BEADS: Natural Turquoise and pyrite chunks from the Compitos mine, Mexico. Each turquoise chunk is capped with antiqued metal. A magnificent chaplet.

METAL:  This rare medal is called ‘Mary in the Rosary'(‘MADONNA IM ROSENKRANZ’). Artist Tilman Riemenschneider (1521 – 1524). Original carved in wood, was used as a visual teaching aid for those who could not read.

Celtic Money Ring on opposite end.

A recent trip to Germany opened up the beautiful world of ‘Gebetskette Zehners’ or prayer chains with 10 beads. We thought the Penal Chaplet was the origin of this design but it appears to be much older and more universal. We have some silver ‘Zehners’ dated mid 1800’s and the antique dealer (Oberammergau) explained they were men’s chaplets. (see Rosary Workshop Museum).

The actual inspiration for the chaplet to your left may be seen in the magnificent German book DER ROZENKRANZ (Andacht Geschichte Kunst). One of the chaplets in the book show a tassel at the end with a crucifix attached to the skirt. These were dated from the 1500’s – 1700’s.

ABOUT OUR MEDALS: All medals on our website are hand cast from antiques and vintage pieces in sterling silver and solid bronze then antiqued to restore original patina.
