FACETED AMETHYST CHUNKS “ZEHNER”

BEADS: Deep purple amethyst hand faceted stone.

MEDAL:  MADONNA of the SHRINE – antique, Spain/18c (2 in.) Patroness of Toledo Spain. “NUESTRA SRA DEL SAGRARIO, PATRONA DE TOLEDO” and was probably on an antique rosary at one time. (late 1600’s early 1700’s.)

THUMB RING: Cast from an ancient Celtic Money Ring. Ring Money predates the Christian period.

A recent trip to Germany opened up the beautiful world of “Gebetskette Zehners” or prayer chains with 10 beads. We thought the Penal Chaplet was the origin of this design but it appears to be much older and more universal. We have some silver “Zehners? dated mid 1800″s and the antique dealer (Oberammergau) explained they were men’s chaplets. (see Rosary Workshop Museum).

The actual inspiration for the chaplet to your left may be seen in the magnificent German book DER ROZENKRANZ (Andacht Geschichte Kunst). One of the chaplets in the book show a tassel at the end with a crucifix attached to the skirt. These were dated from the 1500’s 1700’s.

ABOUT OUR MEDALS: All medals on our website are hand cast from antiques and vintage pieces in sterling silver and solid bronze then antiqued to restore original patina.
