HISTORY OF OUR LADY OF PROMPT SUCCOR

URSULINE ACADEMY – 1727
The Ursuline Academy for girls was founded in 1727. It is the oldest girls’ school and the oldest Catholic school in the United States. (Especially seeing to the needs of slave or free creoles in the French Quarter) It was well established in 1815 when on January 7th General Andrew Jackson led his troops in the Battle of New Orleans.

By 1763, Louisiana had fallen under Spanish control. By 1800, the territory came back into French possession. Fearing the anti clerical sentiment of the French, many of the sisters fled to Cuba. With the loss of sisters, Mother applied for more nuns but feared may not be able to complete as the final word would have to come from the Pope who was a prisoner of Napoleon at that time!

Mother St. Michael prayed before a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary and said, “O most Holy Virgin Mary, if you obtain for me a prompt and favorable answer to this letter, I promise to have you honored at New Orleans under the title of Our Lady of Prompt Succor.” Sending her petition on March 19, 1809, Mother St. Michael was delighted to receive a letter from the Holy Father granting her prompt request on April 29, 1809! She was granted permission to commission a statue of Our Lady holding the infant Jesus. The statue was placed in the Chapel, Dec 31, 1810.
