Description
PILGRIMAGE ‘SOUVENIR’ SERIES – OUR LADY OF ATOCHA I: To this day – as people go on pilgrimages – they collect souvenirs from each area visited. Typically, these medals are added to their rosaries as not only a reminder of the pilgrimage but also to direct prayer and interceed for loved ones or for special needs. We are delighted to have found this very old collection and encourage you to purchase them for your rosary and add special prayers on each.
The reverse says: N.S. de ATOCHA
WHO IS OUR LADY OF ATOCHA? She is the mother of ‘Santo Niño de Atocha’ who according to some legends, escaped his mother’s watchful eye and brought food and drink to Christians incarcerated by the Moors in Madrid. The image was first mentioned in the 7th century, pointing to the image of Mary holding an apple in her right hand and blessing Christ child on her left knee and arm.
PRIMITIVE DESIGN: Early medals and their devotions were brought from Italy and Spain from as early as the 1700s (possibly earlier). When the Spanish Colonial (New Spain) artisans tried to duplicate them – in the process of copying this new religious art form – created their own more primitive but wonderful folk art style.
ABOUT OUR MEDALS: All medals on our website are hand cast from antiques and vintage pieces in sterling silver and solid bronze then antiqued to restore original patina.
